photoshopcs and adjustment layers

I have installed Cs and under preferences-file handling- chose never for maximize file compatability. Despite this upon using adjustment layers my file size grows significantly- eg. with three adj layers from 33 mb to 145 mb. The consequence is that subsequent opening and saving of files takes longer than 1 minute. I have a pentium 3-900 megaherz processor and 750 mb of Ram. This problem did not occur with PS 7 and still doesn’t if I open the identical file. Does anyone know how to fix this?

As far as I can tell, the file sizes are identical between PS 7 and CS.
