gradiant fill not working

When I start with a new layout and try to use the gradiant tool. When I add a new gradiant fill layer it works…any help?

I am using xp with photoshop cs

Can you enlarge upon "not working".

Are you sure the blending mode is set to "Normal"?

I apply the fill it shows in history but nothing happens…

How do I check to see that it is set to normal

Look at the options bar at the top of the screen when you select the tool.
