Upgrade!
But seriously, best you can do is install it and see if it does. I would wager that it might not, though I haven’t tried.
Just tried v3 ( I use v6 mostly but installed v3 for some reason ages ago) to confirm and yes this works fine on XP Pro so I don’t see why v4 shouldn’t.

HyweIG – I see you tried v3 on XP PRO. I installed v3 but when I launch it I get an error: "There is not enough memory (RAM) to launch Photoshop". I have a P4 1400MHz, 1.40GHz, 1.00GB of RAM. I think this should be enough.
Did you get this error? If yes, what did you do?
Sae-ang,
Version 3 CANNOT be used with systems with over 512 megs or RAM
The message is get is disc error… error is fatal.. and then it quits. I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling but it still does it.
If I want to upgrade to a newer version, do I have to buy another $500 program?
Thanks!
The upgrade to ID CS is $169.00. You may even be able to find it cheaper if you look around.
Bob
ID CS
Should be PS CS.
Bob
Actually, Photoshop Elements would probably be a better choice than PS4. Colour mgt was basically nonexistant in PS4.
There has to be a way to install ver. 4.0 on XP..I am getting the same error message "This program requires at least 3 mb free virtual memory". I have a new system with 1 gig on board and anything else you could think of. HELP!
You didn’t happen to try turning off virtual memory, did you?
Bob
I am not sure how to do that on XP. Ill go the the Microsoft site.
That’s from the autorun on the install CD. Try running setup.exe manually, navigate to <cd drive>:\PHOTOSHP\DISK1 and double click setup.exe.

Wade,
Bob wasn’t suggesting that you DO disable VM – that WOULD stop Photoshop from installing!
Thanks Derrick, I went in the back door though windows explorer and found the CD rom drive, then found set.exe and it worked. Thanks again.
No problem. Does version 4 work with 1 gig of RAM?

I THINK so. I think it’s ver. 3 that spits up with that much room. I HAVE heard that you need to find and apply the 4.01 patch under xp though. Not sure if that’s etched in stone.
Before spending money, try Cacheman to manage >512MB of RAM. It solves memory problems in Win98SE, anyway.
While trying to run Photoshop 4.0 on Windows XP.. The error message says "Disk Error 36-while reading or writing virtual memory file. Error is fatal."
Do you know what to do to explore this?
Thanks!

How do you log in through the back door?
HELP with ver5.5 I am trying to install on my new pc with windows XP pro. I keep getting error code:-106 and then it quits. What is this code and how do I fix it.
TY. Please email me at
Just spent hours trying to overcome the same problem. My fix was to bring the memory used by photoshop in the preference settigs back to the default 50%. If I made any change over this XP would give the -36 error. Not as quick as i would like but at least I can use it normally. This applies to 4.0 & 5.0. Hope it works for you.
pamela, first empty out your temp folder. then copy the photoshop directory from the cd to your desktop and run the install from there.
wally, error 36 is usually some corruption on the hard drive. run a chkdsk with fix all option.
I have Photoshop 4.0.1 on XP with 2 monitors (matrox550 card, 1g ram, 2.6 p4)
My question is I can move the photoshop window and working picture onto screen 2 but none of the pallets. (Painter 5.5 has similar prob) The only advice I can get is that if its a MS DOS prog then it cannot utilise the two screens.
Because PS4 is a Win 95 program and the fact half of it does display over two screens I’m trying to confirm that this is a problem only corrected by an upgrade to XP compatable software?
please tell me there is a patch or something!
Cheers, Ed.
Ed: There is, and only will be, one patch and you have it.
