Extract subject from background

Hi All,

I am using Photochop CS.

I have some backlit photographs where I want to isolate the subject from the background then lreduce the shadow effect on the sunject.

Can anyone direct me to a good tutorial or tell me a process to follow.

not tutorial, but you have several ways doing it, eg you can select roughly the object, copy it (ctrl-c) on a different layer (ctrl-v) then erase what isn’t needed using the eraser or a mask applyed to the newly created layer. Sometimes to desaturate the edges of the extracted object can help integrating better it on the background

Probably a bit more information required. I have a back-lit portrait where I just wanted to reduce the shadow effect on the face.

What is the easiest way to accurately select the subject so the contrast effect can be lessened.

Highlight shadows tool. Then history brush to restore everything else back. I will sometimes desaturate everything except the subject a bit to make the subject stand out a bit more.

Hi Adam,

You could try:
First separate the background with a mask.
Add a style with a radial gradient to the new layer – play around quite a bit.
Duplicate this layer and blend the background back with itself – try the burn modes and play with opacity.
This works nicely with rim.
