I’ve added a new discussion on using overlays vs curves to the tips section of my web site.
Basically, many tools can produce the same results and, while this gives the experts lots of things to write books about, doesn’t do much except add to the general confusion for average users. Simpler is better, in my opinion.

Agreed, and a very concise and clear article, Robert. I particularly like your technique of using a step wedge to illustrate the effect of a particular change, and to extract the data.
