For some reason when I add a layer mask to an image and fill the mask with 100% black it doesn’t obscure the image completly. I can still see the image faintly- more easily when it’s above a layer filled with white.

Is this normal?

joe,

Your fill opacity is less than 100%. Change it to 100%.

Nevermind *stupid me*…I thought I hit D to make the black pure black…but apparently I didn’t. The problem was the black was a few notches off from pure black- just enough to not mask out the image completly.

I appreciate the quick response though George. Thanks!

Yeah, that’ll do it. Opacity and gray tone value are redundant for masking. You can get every possible mask opacity from the fill (or brush) tone or opacity. It is a common pitfall to overlook one or the other. I like to leave opacity at 100% and adjust mask opacity via foreground tone. Others might prefer to leave color at full black and adjust fill or brush opacity. Only a masochist would adjust both tone and opacity. 🙂
