I have imported a NEF file of a very contrasty scene at the beach.

On all three chanels most of the mid tones are in the left third, I think this is what I would expect.

However the curve goes off the top of the graph.

What does this indicate?

My guess is that this means I have clipped something but the left and right of the histogram appear fine.

The height of the histogram just indicates the percentage or number of pixels in the image which represents the given tone. So it can never ‘clip’.
