I often use DEE when I scan my slides with a Nikon scanner. (It lightens just the shadow area, bringing out shadow detail.) Is there an equivalent in PS6.0?

There are many tools in PS allowing you to do that.
Curves would probably be the best one.

In Photoshop CS, they started with shadow/highlight tool, which may be more convenient than working with curves if you are not used to them.
