To go even further from the previous poster about transparencies, How do you make a background transparent?
I have a logo with a white background I want to make transparent. The lettering is blue with red accent lines above and below script. Newbie, so be nice.

Extract all from the logo, except the white background, click "New" -select clipboard and transparent, click paste – are you happy, it’s ok, not happy, do it again.

Assuming that you have only one layer, which is background layer, you must first rename the layer to something like layer 0. Thenuse the magic wand to select the white background then choose ‘select’ from the top menu, then choose similar and click delete. This should provide you with a transparent background.

That’s clumsy, crude, and awkward.

Here is a good general-purpose rule to remember: Any time you find yourself using copy/paste in Photoshop, you’re quite likely doing something wrong; there is an easier way to do what you are doing.

In this case, if the background is white then it’s a cakewalk. Sample the white, select->Color Range, invert the selection, save it as a layer mask. No copy/paste, and you can if you need to easily make changes to the mask.

I have a bunch of transparent backgrounds on my sites. You are welcome to use them.

Thank you all for your suggestions.
I’ll try to put them to use in the next couple of days.
