It looks like I’ll be going with 7.0
Or not. 7.0 isn’t being sold anymore unless you get lucky and find a retailer with an old version laying around.
You might find it on eBay or someplace similar but it’s a case of "buyer beware".
I know a reputable place that has it for sale.
We’ve heard that story a lot here. I can’t think of any reputable dealers that still have 7.0.
Bob
I can’t think of any reputable dealers that still have 7.0.
especially if it costs 49 or 99 dollars… 🙂
so if you get it, know that you may not be able to register it or upgrade it or install the 7.01 update that fixes tons of bugs in 7.0
and there’s no such thing as 7.0 "OEM" version if that’s what they’re selling.
For all we know, this might also be a legitimate seller, one that simply has the Photoshop 7 box in stock, only they didn’t sell it yet.
Why is everybody so easily triggered into suspicion lately.
BTW, I recently made the leap to CS, and up till now I’ve had no problems. It works fine.
But what happened to the keyboard shortcuts? (joking, sorry)
Of one new feature I wasn’t even aware; Chromatic Abberation and Vignetting. This works very good.
Rob
If you look on Help forums like these, all you will see is problems. Folks don’t come here to say " The application is great and I’ve had no problems".
The volume of reported problems has been no more and probably less than with any other version of Photoshop that has been released.
Version 7 had so many problems that a 7.0.1 patch had to be released. The same applies to version 6.
Most folks have seen very few if any problems with CS that haven’t been down to user error – and that will always happen with a new version until folks get used to the changes from the version they are familiar with
….and by the way, "Text on a Path" is one of about 20 major new features in CS, all listed on the Adobe web site and 1001 reviews in the media. It’s not practical to buy something without reading up on it first and there is no excuse for not doing so!
For all we know, this might also be a legitimate seller, one that simply has the Photoshop 7 box in stock, only they didn’t sell it yet.
Not likely. When a new version ships, the old one gets pulled. And CS shipped quite some time ago.
I’m not accusing anyone of anything, but it’s certainly caveat emptor in the case of old versions.

I’m glad someone agrees with me. The price is $560.
Matt,
Try the CS demo to check if you’ll get into trouble. If not, the money spent on the retail version will be worth it, more than the money spent on PS7
I did the same. I have PS7 and simply tried CS demo. It installed smoothly in it’s own directory, not violating my stable installation of PS 7.
After two weeks I bought the upgrade to CS (knowing I would earn the 210 EUR back with an average assignment).
I don’t regret it. No problems of which I also read. I must add that I have a separate computer for PS. No games; mail; allways-on-internet; experiments etc. Just Photography.
Pentium 4 2,6 GHz, Win 2000 SP4, 1,5 GB ram
Hope this helps a bit,
Rob

Thanks for the tip Rob. I’m going to download it tonight. I’m still on 56k so it will take awhile but I’m sure it will be worth it to try it out first.

That I do not have. Everything is on 1 computer, 1 hard drive, and Windows XP.
I’ll post how it goes.
Thanks,
Matt
Re: Not likely. When a new version ships, the old one gets pulled. And CS shipped quite some time ago.
Not necessarily. I have seen old versions of Adobe at Best Buy, Office Depot and Future Shop (large Canadian chain). The odd thing is that the price is not even low enough to encourage one to buy, then pay for the upgrade (in other words, the discount is less than $170 of the new version).
It seems that these things sit on the shelf until they find a sucker who doesn’t know about version numbers.
I bought PS 7 upgrade for Mac several months ago off ebay. It was from a bookstore who had an unopened shrinkwrapped retail box. I find buyer/seller verification quite easy and trustworthy on ebay. My bid won at $170.
My experience on ebay is I’ve only sold once and bought three times with the second purchase ending in a stop payment on a money order caused by the seller’s misleading discription of the condition of a CD I ended up returning. I was out only $12 for the stop payment. No big loss, but a lesson well learned on what to check for.
My two cents: I am on a rather ‘old’ machine (P3 1GHZ and 512MB on XP), and upgraded to CS from 7.01. CS runs fine and I don’t notice any slowdowns or problems. Actually, opening files and running simple tasks such as auto color even seem faster than PS 7. The Browser is indeed slow, but we all know why as I learned from this forum. I just don’t use it.
1.8 processor & 1024 ram. Machine over a year old. I have had no problems with CS. I do believe the filters are slower than in ver. 7, but no big deal. The added features are worth the upgrade.
Just wanted let you know that I installed the trial version of CS and everything seems to be working okay on my computer. I did have one problem when it exited when I was in the help section but other than that, no blow-ups yet. I also discovered that a couple of the tutorials online didn’t work with this version. It might just be that I read them wrong. I’ll have to find them and do them again and see. I’m sure there is a work-around for this version if the tutorial was for a previous version of PS.
Thanks,
Matt
I noted that CS was MUCH slower on my 800 Mhz machine – and it scarfed all the memory – I bit the bullet and upgraded to P4 3 Gig – and a SATA drive – now it runs great –
I really like the Navigator – which was very crude in 7.x
Oh, and I LOVE adjust shadow/highlight – opening up shadows can really make a big difference in a lot of photography situations.

little cheerleaders at bonfire night before the mayor’s trophy game! XD
My desktop is PIII, 650 MHZ, 384 MB RAM. My laptop is a cheap Compaq, with some kind of Athlon processor, and only has 128 MB of RAM. (Sorry, the laptop wasn’t bought for any other reason than to download photos from my memory card while traveling, and things like that, so I just bought the cheapest one I could find that was a half way reputable brand, and I don’t have a clue what the processor is. All I knew was that I didn’t want Celeron).
Anyway, with the exception of having a conflict with the Macrovision Safecast thing and my desktop in the beginning, which Adobe solved for me, I have had no problems at all with CS.
It runs as fast as 6.01 on both machines even though they are hardly state of the art machines, and I don’t seem to have any real problems with the browser.
I would really miss things like camera raw and highlight and shadow, among other things.
About hearing about many problems with CS, whoever said it back in the beginning of this thread was right. Many people never come to these forums if they don’t have problems.
I am one of those people who used Photoshop for a number of years with no problems at all. I never visited the forums until I had the conflict with CS. I’m sort of glad I had it, because I have learned a lot of valuable things here, that I never would have learned if I hadn’t had problems and come here looking for answers!

just wanted to say that again! 🙂
