Can I use the cropping tool to crop in a round or oval shape? I know how to crop squares/rectangles but am working on a project that requires rounded corners.

Thanks for any help you can provide

Matt,

The cropping tool only works as a rectangle.

You CAN make a selection with the elliptical marquee, and then Image->Crop… but that will just crop a rectangle exactly fitting the largest dimensions of your ellipse.

All raster images are rectangular, so in order to make your image APPEAR to be elliptical, or have rounded corners, you need to set the portion of the image outside your desired shape to be transparent. As an alternative to transparency, you could also set that portion of the image to be the same color as the background on which it will be placed, if that is a solid color.

Keep in mind that not all image types maintain transparency, so if you need to move your elliptical image to another application, be sure to use a type that does.

Byron
