okay I just bought this program from journeyed.com for my graphic art class I will lbe haveing for about 3 and a half years.

Many options are greyed out when they are not available depending on what your image contains. For instance, the spell checker is not liable to work without any text. Paste will not be available until you have cut something. Cut and copy will not be available until you select something (on a layer that has content in the area selected).

If filters are not showing up, you could go the Image > Mode and select RGB, and 8 bit. All filters should show up in this mode. Many filters will not work in other modes, particularly 16 bit.

Jpeg also requires 16 bit and possibly no layers. However, you should be able to create a jpg at any time with Save For Web.
