How to apply a drop shadow to an image?
I have tried using layers but to no avail
Can anybody please help

What version? Anything after 5.5, Layer Effects/Layer Styles.

More description might be in order. It ought to be as easy as Ed explains. But define what you mean by "image." All opaque pixels will be given the drop shadow, so if there’s transparency in your layer, or a filled white background, it may not give you the results you want without some additional work. If the entire image area needs a drop shadow you’ll need to increase the image size (so you can see the drop shadow).
