I am trying to emulate skywriting and having little luck, I seem to have a problem applying multiple filters to a text box. Any ideas or relevent experiences??

Adam, are we talking sky writing like the words made of clouds ??? If so use a paint brush and paint the words with white and then go over it with the impressionist brush in some areas ( edges and some in center )and then use the gaussian blur filter. Impressionist brush would be the dab or short tight setting at lowered opacity. Put the writing on a new layer so you’ll be able to edit it without disturbing the bottom layer. You can also lower the opacity of the layer if needed.

oops, forgot you wanted to use the ‘text’ option….sorry…basically the same except use the text in white instead of painting it ( and it would have to be rasterized….darn, hope that’s not a problem ) be sure to lower all the settings on the impressionist brush ( pix, fidelity etc…) to get the right effect.

Another option is to download some of the cloud brushes from the Adobe Exchange and use them to paint. There are some great brushes out there!
