I need to paint normal maps (3D stuff) and I need access to each R G B channel to edit them specifically.

I thought that I’d be able to create a layer for each channel, and then copy them like you can do for creating alpha channels, but this does not work.

Please advise.

In CS2:
– open RGB image
– switch to channels pallet
– prod the tiny triangle
– choose split channels
this will create 3 images and close the original and appends an R a G or a B to the autogenerated filename

– it may need Image > Mode > RGB in order to allow "full" painting on the other hand gray scale painting should be ok?

I think your overcoplicating things. If all you want to do is to edit one channel at a time then go to the channels palette and select the desired channel (ctrl-1,ctrl-2 and ctrl-3 will do the same thing) then paint away on it.
