Hi All,

I am a new Photoshop user. I am using Photoshop 6.0 and am currently creating an ad for a magazine. My problem is when I opened my add this morning all of the individual layers I had yesterday are now combined as a "Layer 1". How do I break them apart again.

Go ahead, get a good laugh, you were a beginner once too 🙂

Thanks!

You can’t "break apart" a flattened Photoshop file into its previous layers after you’ve saved and shut down the application. If all the elements are distinct from each other you could pretty easily select them and CTRL + J to copy them to a new layer. If you’ve flattened layers that had blending modes applied, well, you’re pretty much out of luck.

Maybe did you just hold modifier keys and open a flattened version? In that case, I hope that you did not re-save the file, did you?

Maybe you saved it as a Jpeg which doesn’t support layers. Always save your master files in PSD or TIFF format.
