Match CMYK colours to RGB colours in Photoshop CS2?

I am relatively new to Photoshop. I am designing a letterhead with a photo. The picture is bright green with yellow tones in RGB – luminous all over. However, as soon as I change it to CMYK Color in 16-bits/Channel (for printing), it becomes a much darker, bluer picture with less yellow tones.

I have used Photoshop a little, for retouching and manipulating images, but I am a novice as far changing from RGB to CMYK for printing, and other colour management issues. I was the layout artist in my previous job but all photos were handled by a PS specialist. In my new job I do everything myself.

Could someone please give me guidance on how to proceed in order to have the CMYK photo match as near as possible the bright saturated colors of the RGB photo? I do realise that the printed CMYK will never be as luminous as RGB, but my problem is right from the start matching the CMYK colors are terrible, and I would like to know if there is a quick and easy guide online to adjusting the balances, for the happiest outcome when printed commercially.

From reading other posts here I realise I should calibrate my monitor, and I think, adjust colour management profiles (at the moment I have everything set at the default), and have downloaded the www.computerdarkroom.com document, is this the best way to go?

Thank you very much.

Quickie tip:

When working in RGB, turn on your CMYK preview (Ctrl + Y). This will at least approximate the CMYK colors while still availing you of all the functionality of working in RGB.
