Dumb CS alignment question

I’d like to align an object to center of page. When I select an object the alignment buttons for center, left, right etc are grayed out. Why is this?

Use the Marquee Tool to select the area that you want to align the object to, or "Select All" (Ctrl + A) to align it to the whole page (layer). Then select the "Move Tool". The "Alignment Buttons" should not be grayed out now.
