Grayscale Modes

Using grayscale images, I have noticed a difference in printing Grayscale 8 bit images.

The only difference I can see is in the bar at the top of the image, alongside the file name, the color mode is Gray/8 but the difference is after some images there is an * (asterix), after some there is a # (hash), and after some nothing at all. What does this mean? And how do I make them all the same?

One is not using the native colorspace ( * ) , the other is untagged ( # )… see: <http://user.fundy.net/morris/?photoshop141.shtml#docwindow>
