Is there a good way to add color to a grayscale image file in PS or PSE 2?

Several ways. The most autoMagic is:
Mode – take your pick: duotone, tritone, quadtone

Convert the grayscale image to RGB.

Then paint with a paintbrush set to Color mode, or fill with color in Color mode. Very easy.
