Type Tool does not work

My type tool has just stopped working. I did the "reset tools" which did not work. I have no other tool active or anything in the photo selected in any way. The type is black so it will show up. I would appreciate any help or suggestions.

what version of photoshop? what mode (ie rgb 8 bit) is your file in? are there layers? have you checked the character palette?

I am using Photoshop 5.5. The mode is RGB color, 8 Bits/Channel. I am working in layers and highlight the layer I want to type on. I am not familiar with the character palette. How do I find and check this?
