saving as .gif

today i did something by mistake, i dont know what, but when saving, i cannot choose .gif format, just all photoshop formats and .jpg. before i used to be able to save as "imagename copy.gif" but now, its not there, if i put .gif, i can save, but the layers are still there and later on, i cant open it. help appreciated

Check the Image|Mode. If you are CMYK, for example, or 16-bit, GIF is not an option. You should change image mode, or use Save For Web.

BTW, changing an extension doesn’t change the format. PS reads the extension and expects to "decode" the image according to the specs of that particular format. If you change a JPG to a GIF extension, PS expects it to be GIF and will give an error.
