Need help with (not sure what it’s called)- image fade?

I’d like to achieve the same effect of the image located at the left of the header (the one with the arches) at <http://www.gouldasset.com/>. However, I’m not quite sure how to do it, or what it is even called so I can search for it! If anyone can offer assistance, I would greatly appreciate it. I’m running Photoshop 5.5 (I know, I know… )Thank you!

Evelyn, look up "layer mask" in the help files, that’s exactly what you need for this kind of effect. You’ll be using the gradient tool as well, to get that smooth transition.
