cannot merge pictures in CS2 and blend them

I’m trying to merge two pictures that are side by side but overlapping. I’d like to have the ed of the first one fading into the next one but I have tried everything that is suggested on the help menu, and on the forum, such as adding a mask layer and try to use the gradient (not working!), adding an adjustment layer and using gradient (Not working either!!) so far nothing seems to work…. !!!

Drag a marquee to select the overlapping area, make sure mask is selected, drag gradient across selected area.
