I am experiencing frustration as a designer working with Word. My boss has mandated that I open my tiff, select, copy and paste as a bitmap into Word. He refuses to order a copy of Photoshop which I’ve been using for 15 years. My question is: what happens to a tiff during this prosess, it is downgraded I’m sure but can anyone describe to me what actually happens so I can tell the boss what he is doing? I am backed up against a wall in a standardized world of templates and an engineer for a boss who doesn’t appreciate the knowledge I have of Photoshop.

the image is flattened, converted to RGB, and placed on the clipboard.

And since Word doesn’t know about color management, the appearance may shift if you didn’t have your image in your monitor’s colorspace.

you may also get better results if you save the image then use Insert> Picture> From file in word.

or used Edit> Paste Special> Device Independent Bitmap if you must paste from the clipboard.
