When using the pen tool to render, what are the settings for the pen tool? Because when I tried to do make the selection after closing the paths, it would only drag the outside shape onto the new document. These were the settings I had for the pen tool:
-Shape layers
-Pen tool
-Auto Add/Delete
-Create new shape layer
-Style: Default style (none)
-Color: Black
