Lost custom brush cursor (sporadic)

Photo Shop 10.0.1—From time to time (sporatically) only the precise cross hair cursors are available, regardless of what is checked in preferences. The brushes work, but I like to see the relative size to better judge the outer edge of the stroke.
I am using an iMac with 3.06GHz dual core Intel processor running OS 10.5.5.
