Is there a way to use the crop tool without PS resampling your image. I think that you should be able to crop to a ratio independent of any linear dimensions or resolutions. This way you can crop at the native resolution to achieve the composition you would like, then you can resample as desired using your own techniques. I know that if you don’t enter a resolution that it doesn’t do any resampling, but it does mess with the image size and scales the dpi accordingly, which makes more work to get back to where you should be. Currently, the only way to do this is to use the rectangular marquee tool with a fixed ratio, but that tool is less user friendly for this use a it doesn’t offer the the shield or the ability to drag to resize.

If you "Clear" the crop tool’s settings in the Options Bar it will crop without altering the resolution (ppi)

Shield – no. But you can resize. SELECT>TRANSFORM_SELECTION
