I’m an amatuer and new to studio flash portraiture. Most of my photos of my female models have too much detail in their faces. I don’t mean spots which the healing brush can fix but rather skin pores and shiny skin which has not had make-up properly applied.

I would like to understand what the best PSP tools and procedure to correct this? Is the smudge tool also useful?

Don’t know about PSP but in PS I would copy my image’s background To this copied layer I would apply a blur (guassian, but try others) and also use the healing brush to smooth out any deeper skin folds or wrinkles. Then I would apply a layer mask to this layer and mask out the eyes from the effects of the "corrected" layer.
Then reduce the opacity of this layer to allow the some detail of the background layer to show through.
