Need to create an alpha channel

I need to know if I am able to create an alpha channel on Photoshop elements. If there is a way then, I need to know how to create the alpha channel. I have to transfer files from Photoshop to an AVID editing system. If anyone knows of an easier way other than an alpha channel please let me know. I have the 3.0 version on windows, if that makes a difference. Thanks

Select<Save Selection. Each selection is saved as an Alpha channel although in PSE you don’t have direct access to the Channels.

I must admit I am clueless on the rest of your question.

You may find that you also have load the saved selection and resave the file with the selection active for your video program to be able to use it.
