Have PSE4 and 5.
When I go to Image>Mode, RGB is checked.
8Bits/Channel is grayed out (not available).
Why? Under what circumstances can I access this option?

Hi

Not all file types can support 16 bit.

Jpeg certainly cannot, Psd and Tiff can.
