Can anyone tell me what settings to use for getting a grayscale PDF from Photoshop CS3? I had a customer this week that sent us their ad for our newspapers as a PDF. It was designed in the grayscale mode (it’s supposed to run grayscale), but when the designer saved out a Photoshop PDF, that PDF shifted to rich black. Conversion to grayscale resulted in an unnacceptable color shift.

I was at a loss to tell the designer what settings to use for export. Our department is Mac (G4/G5) and we are using Photoshop 7. The difference between PDF settings for PS7 and CS3 seems to be very great. Since we could not figure this out the designer had to locate an old copy of PS7 and save out a PDF from there.

I need to solve this as we are a small paper and we don’t have a RIP or a million dollar press that can seperate all this on the fly. I need grayscale as grayscale and color as color.

Thanks for any and all suggestions.

If he’s using the Press Quality preset, then he will have to choose the No Conversion option in the Output tab.
