CS4 Freezes at Preferences

Hello, I was wondering if you could help me 🙂

I recently installed Photoshop CS4 extended, and I’m having some problems with Preferences in the edit menu.
When I attempt to go to either "performance" or "general" under preferences, it freezes, then I get an error report and it shuts down.
Everything else has been working fine so far, though, and it’s a wonderful program. My computer is a little older, and is on xp.

press Ctrl+Alt+Shift immediately after starting Photoshop, if done right, you’ll get a dialog box asking you to delete the settings file. Click yes and see if that fixes your problem

I have noticed similar behavior in one of my Vista installations if the scratch disc is not set to the c drive where the program is installed. Why this occurs in some computer configurations and not others relates to inherent instabilities in Bridge that Adobe has never corrected in both CS3 and CS4.
As long as you have room on your C drive there is little functional difference in putting the scratch drive elsewhere anyway. First, hold down all three Ctrl+Alt+Shift buttons
Now "while keeping those button held," simply open Photoshop or a file that opens with Photoshop
As Photoshop loads, you should get a prompt asking if you would like to "delete the Photoshop settings file", Click yes. The preferences should all be back at their default settings: see it that clears your problem.

Nothing is coming up when I tried that.
I’ve tried reinstalling completely as well…

Reinstalling should not reset your prefs; you’ll need to do it manually as described in the link about, and in post 1.

This is EXACTLY the same problem I had and posted about yesterday. Here’s the thread:

In my case, updating the video card driver solved the problem (or at least part of my problem, although the other part of my problem is related to a second video card that does not support OpenGL).

So… try updating your video card driver and see it that helps. In my case, deleting and resetting the Preferences file did not solve the problem.
