Order of Files in Batch Processing

If you run a batch process on image files in a folder, what determines the order in which those files are opened? Is there a way to specify for instance that they be opened according to their date of creation?

I am currently running CS2 but expect CS5 to arrive any day now, in case that has additional functionality in this area.
