Help with removing background

I am a complete novice when it comes to removing backgrounds from images. I have been struggling with Photoshop and its clear that I do not have the correct concept of how masks operate. There is no problem selecting areas to remove but getting them filled with a solid colour is another issue. I have searched for help and all I seem to find is advanced stuff that assumes one knows the basics.

Can someone point me to a good simple basic source for help.

There is no basic nor advanced but how well you do it. Removing background can be very simple using the very basic commands, and can be very hard (to impossible) if you don’t do well on the basic commands.

And yes, in many cases you may need to use some trick to hide the mess around the edge. It’s pretty hard to explain to newbie, but if you want to see how some Photoshop users do then you should go to YOUTUBE to see some samples.

Be aware that most (if not all) of those tricks are only good for displaying, and some may be ok for small print. And just by looking at the commands they use, I can say that none (or at least most) of them is good for 8×10" print (and impossible for larger size).

"No problem selecting areas" and I can see the problem without seeing it. It’s pretty much impossible to make a perfect selection, so you may have to learn some trick how to HIDE to mess around the edge (including some blending trick)

Thanks guys, I’ve made progress and moved past my initial frustration. I now have the basics of how masks work now after a lot of searching and reading.
