I’m running photoshop CS2 on a mac osx 10.5.1. I accidentally dragged a photoshop image i was working on into the trash and deleted it. Is there anywhere in photoshop or on my mac where info on this file may be saved? I really would love it back. Thanks!

Did you empty the trash? If not, open the trash can. If you did empty the trash, then the file is probably gone for good.

yes i did empty the trash unfortunately. i figured i was doomed, but thought i’d try to find out whether there was any way files get saved somewhere even if they get deleted in trash.

If you didn’t do a "secure empty trash" and haven’t used the computer at all since then it should be possible ot scavenge the disk and possibly get your file back.

With all the trouble it will take it might be better to just redo the work.

What ever happened to programs like ‘UnErase"? If files are deleted and the drive has not been written to, then those files are still there, with just a ‘flag’ at the file’s header marking it as invisible and ok to be overwritten (the result of emptying the trash.) A program like ‘UnErase’ would simply go through flagged files for deletion and make them visible and restored again.

Too bad no one has kept up with that simple utility.

There are several (a bunch?) image recovery programs, some of them come included in CF cads and such. The key is not to work on that particular drive at all until you have retrieved your image. Connect from another Mac in target mode if necessary. You can then treat your Mac as an external drive to run the recovery software on it.

But, yes, anybody caught without a backup frankly deserves the grief. :/

GOod NEws: Your files do get saved, by you, as your regular backup routine. Simply go to your backup files and retrieve your files there. You can even give yourself a pat on the back for making regular backups of the files you are working on.

Reese,

There is an old saw about saving and backups: never allow a file to go unsaved or unbacked up any longer than you care to spend recreating it.

Aside from doing regular backups (Time Machine, SuperDuper!…), you should update your OS to 10.5.6.
