I have Elements version 5 and I could not "open" the Canon raw file. If it is possible, how do you do it?

You may not have the latest version of Adobe Camera Raw (ACR). You can go to
www.adobe.com and download the most recent. They provide instructions for installation as well.

ACR = Adobe Camera Raw
and Elements just tells you it can’t open RAW files, you have to go to the adobe site, look for downloads and choose adobe raw converter, then copy it into the required folder (after backing up the original file). Anyway instructions are included on the download page.
