Catalogue suddenly not showing untagged files

I’ve been using Elements 4.0 for a year (maybe more) to catalogue a growing number of digital photos, both personal and business related. I have multiple "collections" as well as lots of photos with various tags.

All has been fine until the other day after I imported a bunch of new shots from a memory card I suddenly noticed that nothing new was showing in the organizer.

Nothing without a tag. All the collections seem to be intact, although none of the photos in any of the collections now show under "show all photos".

I tried creating a new catalogue and letting the program scan my hard drive. It found all the photos and showed them, then suddenly blinked and all the newer photos and untagged or un-categorized ones disappeared again. The new catalogue has no "collections" so I can’t even access those from that catalogue like I can at least do with the original one.

I went back to the original catalogue and tried to import the missing photos from the folders they are in. The program scanned the folders and then told me "nothing was imported as all these are currently in this catalogue". I then tried searching the catalogue for one of the files by name…and was told nothing in the catalogue had that name.

I then tried going to the Windows control panel and doing a "repair" (basically this seemed to be a re-installation from the disc) of the program. This changed nothing.

I created another new catalogue and let the program scan just one folder. It found and imported the photos in the folder. However, when I went from "new photos" to "show all photos", nothing was showing. When I clicked the back button, it returned me to "new photos" and the photos in the folder I’d just imported were still there. However, when I close the program and then re-open it, the option to view "new photos" has, of course, disappeared and no photos are showing in the "show all photos" view. Trying to re-import the same folder results in the same behavior as above, the program tells me nothing was imported because everything is already there.

I’m at a loss to explain this. I like the way the program has been working but I’m about to lose a lot of time put into organizing thousands of digital photos to have to change organizing software if I can’t get this one to work right again.

I’m running Windows XP Pro on a dual core Intel machine with a huge amount of free hard drive space and 2 GB of RAM.

Any help would be appreciated.
