I have a gif, I want it to be a jpg. So I open it in PSE5 and use File \ Save As… and there is no JPG option in the file types drop-down. There are other options, including PNG and TIF.

Thinking that maybe there is a specific limitation when working from a GIF, I saved it as a TIF. Closed the new file and re-opened it and tried to save the TIF as JPG. But again, there is no JPG option. WTF?

I can create a new image (import from scanner, import from clipboard) and save it as a JPG. Why can’t I save as a JPG a file from another format?

"The Superior Person’s Book Of Words", by Peter Bowler: DECALCOMANIA: A transfer – i.e., a picture or design of some kind imprinted on a paper in such a way as to permit its being transferred, after wetting, to another surface. Nowadays what used to be called simply ‘transfers’ are coming to be called ‘decals’ – which is simply an abbreviation of the above word.

Common Problem.

The answer is usually that your file is either 16bit per channel or that it has layers. Neither of these are compatible with Jpeg.

I no longer have that image so I can’t check. But I was able to convert it to JPG with XnView. I find it exceedingly strange that a free image +viewer+ program that has only a limited editing ability can do an editor function that Elements cannot.

No version of any photo editing program can save 16 bit per channel images or images with layers as a Jpeg. Some programs can also be incompatible with those file types, and may chop off the extra bits and layers.

The reason, as I said in my reply, is that Jpeg is incompatible with those file types.

This is a fact which is totally unrelated to the ability of the program, and relates to the definition for Jpeg files.

Elements and Photoshop just remove file types from the drop down lists when those file types are incompatible with the type of file you are attempting to save.
