photoshop cs5.1- opening image problem

All of my images are opening as a transparent layer- I cant see the photo that I am opening. I can only see the transparency grid- But if I go to the layer menu (yes all layers are listed) and click on any layer it fixes the problem. So – the act of either opening or closing a layer, closes the transparency layer. Any idea what could be causing this?

seems my opengl memory allocation was causing it. I increased the memory and problem disappeared.
