Suddenly, when trying to use the eraser (or other tools), I’m getting the error message "could not use the eraser because the content of the layer is not directly editable." Did I inadvertently change a setting somewhere? I’m having to draw white shapes to block out the part I previously could erase.

I’m running PhotoShop 7.01 on Windows XP.

Thanks!

No, you targetted a layer that isn’t pixels – like a type layer, an adjustment layer, a fill layer, etc.

How do I ensure the new layer is pixels?

I’m drawing lines and need to erase part of them. I create a new layer like I always have (NOT using ‘new fill layer’ or ‘new adjustment layer’), I use the line draw tool and still get that error message.

Madeline,

I use the line draw tool and still get that error message.<<

You will if you have the options in the options bar set to paths or shape layer. A line drawn with the line tool is a vector path and NOT pixels in this case. To erase a part you would need to go to Layers>Rasterize>Shape layer for a Shape layer or stroke the Path from the Paths palette for a Path.

If you select the Fill Pixels options in the Options Bar the line will be directly editable.
