I am new to this, and learning on my own, can I import a .dwg file (CAD Drawing) into photoshop 7.0, it does not seem that i can, i am unable to save the drawing in CAD to anything other than .DWG or .DXF or .SLD, how then can i import the drawing, if at all.

Thanks for your advice in advance, much appreciated.

craigg, have you looked if your CAD program allows to export(not save) to other formats? If not, your last resort is to make printscreens and assemble them.

Please, do not make topics in ALL CAPS! thanks!

Craig,

if it is AutoCad: Export as PDF. Don´t export as EPS.

FYI, AutoCAD does not export to PDF. It can print to PDF if you install Acrobat or some other PDF software. It can also print to EPS if you create a PostScript printer, printing will give you control over lineweight, color, and print area

Derrick,

you are right about the naming.
But it happens like this: print to file as PostScript
calls Distiller automatically (probably only if Distiller is installed).

The PDF prints are more accurate than printing by AutoCad itself, concerning line widths.

Print to file as EPS ends in confusion. In our version
it´s definitely chaotic: wrong size, wrong line widths, wrong colors.

We had handled the complete set of technical design drawings for a larger project as explained and bundled as a PDF doc (using PageMaker).

I´m really happy that this works, because the recommendations were (and are still): import in Illustrator and change line widths and colors.

Opposed to warnings we didn´t have any problems with hatch.

Gernot, Printing to a Postscript PC3 file from AutoCAD creates an EPS file and it does not use Distiller and uses the Postscript printer driver that ships with AutoCAD. Printing to a Distiller PC3 file requires that Acrobat be installed on the system just to create the PC3 file. Either method will result in almost identical output (at least in my experience) when opened in Illustrator

Derrick,

what is PC3 ? Do you mean PostScript level 3 ?
Maybe we have different versions of AutoCad (can´t clarify this here at home).

We are creating PDFs, using Acrobat Distiller PostScript Printer Driver as the virtual PostScript printer.
Of course one may argue – yes, the method seems to be OK, but isn´t there another one which works as well ?

I´m leaving it at that. After all these nonsensical advices how to clean-up AutoCAD EPS files (several years in the
PageMaker Forum) it turned out that the PDF workflow is
correct and reliable. Technical designers don´t use AI.

What version AutoCAD files are importing into CorelDraw? I have been trying to import AutoCAD 2004 and AutoCAD 2005 drawings into Illustrator CW and have had no luck. Illustrator won’t recognize versions that recent.

Any suggestions?
