When you control click on the working area of your PSD, the canvas area, with the move tool it’s supposed to automatically select the layer that your move tool is over. But if there is a layer above the layer that you are trying to select, and even if the layer’s eye is closed, photoshop will still select the layer above. Even more annoying, if the top layer is locked, it will still select that layer. It ruins the feature of auto selecting completely !

This facility is really most use for non-overlapping [or small overlaps]. Have you used right-mouse click?

Colin, I’ve seen several similar complaints… it seems that Photoshop ignores the locking or invisibility setting of a layer…

Right clicking is all messed up too! When you right click on an area you get all of the layer names in the document, not just the ones your move tool is over top of. Actually, that’s not completely true, it’s weird, you’ll get the layer names for layers that’s eye is turned off. And you’ll get all the layer shapes, no matter where they are on the screen. And I think you’ll get all of the layer set names too. It’s all messed!

Usual cure-all remedy: try a rest prefs [per FAQ]. See whether that changes anything.
