I’m sure this is easy and I’m a dunce…but… I am working on a logo and I wish to use a hyphenated circle as an element of it. A circle with equal and equidistant parts cut out around the entire circumference to let the background show through.

Can anyone point me at a tutorial?

Thank you so much,
Pen

Wrong tool for the job.

What you’re trying to do is a five-second pice of cake in Illustrator, which is the right tool for logo design.

Logos designed in Illustrator are "vector" and can be used at any size, billboard to postage stamp, with no loss of quality. Logos done in Photoshop can’t be resized without loss. Your job will be easier and less frustrating if you use the right tool.

Yep I would have said that as well. I was using Flash to draw in, which also makes vector images.

It was just for a placeholder onna website.

I figured out a super simple way to do it in PS, and got what I needed done. It’s all good.

I do appreciate the time you took to answer my question, and I would have appreciated instructions for either tool you’ve mentioned, since I was apparently using the wrong one, but thank you for pointing out my error and offering absolutely no help whatsoever! 😛

Peace,
Pen

Would you be kind to share what simple way you have figured out? Thanks.

Sure! I didn’t think anyone would want it considering I was doing all the wrong things!!!

First I created my doc with a 5px wide circle, about 180 pixels in width/height.

I have a ‘lens flare’ dingbat font, and specifically looked for one that had evenly spaced ‘arms’, you know spiky glare protrusions from the center?

http://simplythebest.net/fonts/fonts/fontco_flares.html – is the one I used.

I used the one on the bottom, 4th from left.

Sized and placed that over my circle to attain my desired circle ‘break’ pattern, and knocked it out.

Poof, perfect broken circle. 🙂

Took all of about 2 minutes once I figured out how to do it. 😛

interesting but unorthodox method

simpler method and can be done in PS
yes vectors blah blah many logos are just for internet and do not need vector art
just to cover your ass work in hi res and decent size
resize art later for web

draw circle with marquee tool (oval, hold down shift)
path palette
at bottom
choose ""stroke selection""

you can set the brush tip shape to anything
for dashes choose the square tip brush
and change the spacing

brush tool is very versatile and many are uniformed of it’s various options I find path and channels palette are underused but powerful tools

You were only using the "wrong tool". Nothing more. Nothing less. Ever try frying an egg on a grill?

Pull your panties out of their wad and take professional advice for exactly what it is.

By re-reading the original message and the FONT I now can see what you try to do, and the word "LOGO" can confuse other. Cuz when people read the word "LOGO" they may think of professional logo with sharpest detail that Photoshop isn’t designed for it.

But it seems like you just need some very simple Logo for displaying, or not professional Logo.

I would think that people who don’t get a little tongue-in-cheek good natured jibing are the one’s who’ve got a panty-problem….but maybe that’s just me.

The gist of my point was that neither of the posters I was gently poking actually offered any real solution to my problem, just displayed their ‘prowess’ and wandered off into the sunset.

‘Son, your horse appears to be foundering.’ *clop clop clop* ‘Gee thanks Mr. Professional Cowboy, I never would have survived without your sage council!’ Um…no. 😛

Last visit to the group though before I unsub again — A most sincere and heartfelt thanks to those who have actually offered solutions or guidance rather than dick-waving. You all rock. Immensely.

Happy holidays all!

if you want an argument ask a man
if you want to get the job done ask a woman

don’t let those dick wavers mess with ya Penny
you asked a very simple question in a HUMBLE way
that I know at least one of them knew the answer to

and instead tried to lecture you on what program makes better logos not the question you asked
Then generously shared your novel solution with them and still they respond poorly
You are the kind of poster we need more of, temperate and polite and civil, literate and obviously capable of figuring out stuff yourself

and you rude assholes scare people like her away

It’s sad, but if you are talking about real LOGO for professional use then they are right that Photoshop (bitmap program) isn’t the right tool for the job. And you will need vector program for LOGO.

– Vector, you can zoom in thousands of times and it will remain sharpness

– Bitmap, it will lose sharpness and start showing block at 200-300% etc.. (more/less depending on the original)

The gist of my point was that neither of the posters I was gently poking actually offered any real solution to my problem, just displayed their ‘prowess’ and wandered off into the sunset.
