Any way to open an EPS file with Photoshop without rasterizing it? I can do it just fine in AI, but I’m trying to do it without going through AI. The EPS file has got vector objects I’d like to use, but keep as vector objects if at all possible.

..eps files are vector; PS is pixel-based. So you can’t have a vector image as part of the output. But an .eps file on its own PS layer as a Smart Object retains is vector qualities for editing and manipulating. But once you output to final format (jpeg, .psd, tiff, etc.), the vector object is rasterized.

Have you tried going the other way, with AI as the basis and embedding or tracing the photo so everything is vector?

Copy the object to the clipboard (which you may have to do in AI anyway, but keep reading)

Paste it into PS.

You’ll get a dialog asking how you want it to come into the application. Pick Shape Layer

It comes in as an editable vector. Stays there when you save the file as long as you keep it native. You can, and import it anywhere as a smart object — inside the CS4 space.
