This should be easy, but I can’t figure it out… Is there a way to turn a selection transparent? None of the techniques for filling a selection seem to let me do it. The background eraser doesn’t do what I want (I think).

For web presentations? Go to the Help menu. Type "transparency", then click on "Optimize transparency in GIF and PNG images"\

Please describe in more detail what you are trying to do.

In most cases, selecting an area and hitting the delete key on the keyboard will make it transparent, if it is on a layer. Open the Layers palette and look at it. If the only layer you see is the word "background" in italics, it is not a true layer and nothing will make it transparent. Double-click it in the Layers palette to convert it to a layer first.

Doh! I woke up in the middle of the night to the sound of the voice in my head saying "hit the delete key you idiot!" … thanks for reminding me.

reverse my name in email addressIf your selection is not on a separate layer, hitting del will delete anything you’ve pasted into your selection. CTRL + D will deselect, if that’s what you want, but if, like me, you want to hide the selection before actually deselecting, to see what it will look like, then just click outside the Photoshop window and the dotted lines will disappear until you activate the PS window again.

I discovered this while looking at your question, so thank you for your indirect assistance.

Alternatively, CTRL + H will hide your selection (COMMAND + H in MAC.)

Um, sorry if this reply violates the rules. Didn’t realize how old the post was until it was too late.

If you isolate the desired image portion by using pen tool, then you convert it to .jpg file and the final image background will be transparent.
