When I try to open an eps file, which is using Photoshop to open, I get a message that reads, "Cannot open document because the parser module cannot parse the file". Any idea what caused this and what I can do in order to view it?

Thanks,
E. WIlkerson

Probably corrupted file.
What program made them? Win or Mac?
Probaby more importantly, how did you get them?
If email from a Macintosh, could be the prob right there.

Evelyn,

a corruption might mean "somewhat destroyed".
That can happen if the file was transfered as an
E-mail attachement.
But often it´s a file which wasn´t made according
to the PostScript standards.

I would try to open the file by PageMaker, InDesign
or CorelDraw (no personal experience with CD) or other
programs.
If it looks good then save again as EPS.

Hi,
I’m trying to help a student with his work. He wants to print an eps document exported from VectorWorks. When I try and open the eps document I get the following error message

"Could not open *doc name* because the parser module cannot parse the file."

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

Chris,

VectorWorks sounds like vector graphics. Even if you
could open it by PhS – it would be rastered.

The student should try Export to PDF in the source
program. Or Print as PostScript to File and distill.

Then print directly from Acrobat or place the PDF in
any other (professional) DTP program.

We could overcome all problems like yours in AutoCad
by this workflow.

Thanks Gernot,

Exporting the file as an eps from vectorworks into photoshop has worked fine with other students having similar problems.

I’ll try converting the file into a PDF myself.

I have read something about trying that before, I mentioned it to a student yesterday and she said that you lose a lot of the quality when it is plotted. I’ll give it a try tho

I wish all the architecture students would learn AutoCAD. Life would be much simpler!

Thanks again for your help.

Chris,

you are welcome. We are using AutoCad for simple
applications in engineering. It´s easy to learn,
but in the long run one should model the objects
in 3D and derive the 2D technical drawings, the
3D vector illustrations (wireframes) and 3D pseudo-
realistic images from just one 3D data base (here
by Pro-Engineer).

Not to bother you, but the essential problem is
that Photoshop PDF or EPS import doesn´t retain
the vector characteristics.
An EPS should be placed e.g. in PageMaker or
InDesign and printed.
A PDF can be printed by Acrobat (or it is placed
like the EPS).
