One version of Photoshop will guide you through the process of creating a transparent GIF file. I’m sorry I do not remember which version, but go to the HELP menu to see if it is there.

Otherwise, this might be useful:

(And I apologize for my early unhelpful reply)

and John J said ‘yes’, which is true.
So why keep on and on and on.
The OP did not ask a detailed answer,
so do not right a book about it.

I want to draw some pictures of children in different poses which children in my class can then add into backdrops or add other graphics in software like photo story to create their own films of their stories. The figures need transparent backgrounds – that’s why they need to be cut out. I have tried scanning but get a white rectangle.

Actually, I am rather hoping for an alt to photoshop (misunderstood the group name!!! ) cos it is so expensive for probably the only task I will ever use it for. Any one know of something cheaper or free that will do the job?

I think that you will find that Microsoft Photo Story does not permit the overlay of one picture upon the other. It also does not properly handle transparent GIF or TARGA files (which you need). You can give something of an illusion using its transition mode but still not have the proper overlay of images.

So what you really need is something more simple to build the pictures to bring into Photo Story.

OK, how about finding a simple program to create transparent GIF files, then use Microsoft Power Point or even a simple web page creator?

Sojo, I had a few conversations with
John J, and I tend to think he is one hell of a nice guy. The kind of guy I would like to turn to when in need of answers to a problem. Originally, I also had a fight with him concerning something so small, I forgot what it was about. And I owe him an apology there fore, (sorry John J:-) but seriously, he should be appreciated here.
