My photoshop CS2 (part of Creative Suite) used to work fine, but then now when I try to start the program, I get an error message: "Adobe Photoshop. An error had been detected with a required application library and the product cannot continue. Please reinstall the application."

To remove a virus/spyware, I used Micro Trend Pc-Cillin and Ad-Aware programs. I guess it was "overly effective." I also downloaded handful of Microsoft Windows XP updates. My restore funcion was also disabled per Pc-Cillin’s instructions.

Your help will be greatly apprciated. Thank you in advance.

By the way, I tried (uninstall and) reinstall the program, but it still gives the same error message.

if you’ve already reinstalled, see the faq and reset the prefrences.

Thank you, Dave, for taking the time to respond. I did as you instructed (per FAQ "how to delete/reset PS Preferences — LenHewitt, "How to delete/reset Photoshop preferences" #1, 23 Jun 2004 1:05 am </cgi-bin/webx?13/0>) but it is still giving me the same error message. I appreciate your help though.

It sounds like you may have a bad plug-in. I’d suggest going to your plugin directory and renaming each non-adobe plugin or subdirectory with a ~ (tilde) before the name to disable them and see if it works. If so, you can rename them back, a few at a time, until you see where the problem is.

Also, if you have an additional plugins directory, follow the same procedure there. (But if you’ve reset your preferences, you probably don’t have an additional plugins directory defined now!)

I’m having the exact same problem… I have no aditional plug-ins installed… In fact, I completely uninstalled Photoshop CS2 and reinstalled it again (Default path, default settings). I’ve never had a problem with Photoshop before especially with a default installation to the default path??? come on Adobe! Other people are getting this error, what’s up?

What’s up is that you have a bad install OR something on your system is interferring with Photoshop loading.

Since you’ve reinstalled and get the same error – I’d suspect you’ve got a virus or some utility program interferring.

A friend of mine who thinks he knows all about computers recently downloaded a bunch of updates from the MS Update site and he must have downloaded something that doesn’t get along with some of my programs, because after that all I’ve been having are problems. I’m having the same exact problem with Photoshop CS2 as Charles and Corby, plus my MS FrontPage won’t start at all, even though I’ve uninstalled and re-installed it every time I make a change.
I have no idea what my buddy downloaded so I don’t know what I should uninstall. I need both of these programs and I’m very frustrated at this time. I’m seriously considering a clean install.
I know this wasn’t helpful, but I needed to complain to someone who knows what I’m talking about.

Donald,

If you have WXP, you can restore your PC to the time before the updates were installed.
Go to Start>All programs>Accessories>System tools>System restore.

Been there – done that – didn’t work.

Thanks anyway T Mike.
