distribute space evenly

Hello,

I have a series of text items on separate layers that are all different widths. I would like to perform the same function that Illustrator CS2 has which is distribute space evenly. Am I missing something? I haven’t found that feature yet. If there isn’t, what would be the most painless way of distributing space evenly amongst these objects.

I thought about importing the text from Illustrator which will already be aligned but I am working with an old file and I do not have access to which layer style was used for the text.

Thanks

-Gail

Just use the distribute layer commands in Photoshop.

Hi,

This is my exact problem and it happens with text or boxes. The space at the far right edge looks squeezed it’s not distributing it evenly.

1) Create 6 items for eg boxes all different widths and on separate layers.
2) Shift click each layer selecting all layers
3) Distribute horizontal center

The result is a much smaller space between the last 2 far right objects.

I’ve also tried locking the alignment of one layer hoping that the rest of the items will distribute evenly from that point.

1) Select them all
2) Click the link icon
3) Click the layer I want in place

What would be causing the noticeable uneven space on the end?

Thanks

Just use the distribute layer commands in Photoshop.

Those commands don’t address the original post’s scenario, because it involves objects of different widths. Photoshop only distributes by left edges, centers, or right edges. Because the widths of the objects are different, the spaces between the objects cannot be equal using the three available distribution options in Photoshop.

Illustrator/FreeHand, InDesign, and others include a "Distribute Spacing" feature that evenly distributes the space between objects instead of the distance between a common point on each object.

It looks as if Photoshop the image editor is reaching its limits as a layout program.

I don’t see that as a bad thing.

Oh I dunno John, it seems to me that placement of the spaces between objects in an image could affect the image just as much as the objects themselves.

So, based on those comments. Am I right to make the conclusion that it does not work out exactly like Illustrator’s distribute space evenly function? There will always be some tweaking required.

I’ve been away from PS for a bit and got really used to Illustrator’s handy alignment tools.

Sorry.

Photoshop is not yet as object oriented as Illustrator or InDesign.
